I never use VOX on any radio and the RF gain is at maximum, so don't need them on the Scout. I rarely operate CW, and when I do, my speed rarely hits 15 WPA, so the drift is no problem.

The voltage issue OK since I always operate mine from a 13.8 volt home supply. Just turn it on and talk!Īs for its shortcomings, they don't bother me. No complicated menus or control panels that resemble a 757 jet. The Scout is just a super fun radio to operate. I made a foam lined module case, where they stay clean and ready to use. I'm glad now that I see the modules being sold at ripoff prices. I bought my Scout used around 2000 and wisely bought the extra band modules so I had the entire package of 9. Not a problem to figure out the radio and easy to learn as a newbie. The one I got now didn't work correctly, was filthy, inside and out, had to clean it up and now sseems to work okay for the moment. Wish the radio had some QRM fighting abilities, NB is a no show, made for ignition noise so don't get too much satisfaction for QRN in general. Got another and about the same in expectations. However, you might do well to get a used TS-130 or similar as you get more flexibility but a bit more current draw on rcv. All in all, for what you can get for around $300 or so, not bad. Most QRP radios have some sort of RF Gain control. Sure would like to see an RF Gain control on this unit. Sensitivity isn't the best and selectivity certainly isn't. Without on, if you have noise, you can't hear a S-7-9 signal thru it. One gripe is the lack of a noise blanker. I have had this unit for a while and it plays well. I gave this radio a 4 because there are some inherent things this radio could or should have.
